A Photographic Journey Through Kenya: Kazu and Minako’s Masai Mara Shoot and Naivasha National Park Adventure
A Photographic Journey Through Kenya: Kazu and Minaki's Masai Mara Shoot and Naivasha National Park Adventure
Kenya, often regarded as one of the most iconic safari destinations in the world, never fails to captivate with its breathtaking landscapes, abundant wildlife, and rich cultural heritage. Recently, I had the privilege of following the exciting journey of two photographers, Kazu and Minako, as they embarked on a photographic adventure across two of Kenya’s most renowned natural gems: the Masai Mara and Naivasha National Park.
In this blog, I’ll walk you through their unforgettable experience—capturing the awe-inspiring beauty of the Masai Mara’s vast savannahs, and the serene, mist-covered lakes and lush surroundings of Naivasha National Park.

The Masai Mara – A Canvas of Life
The Masai Mara, part of the larger Serengeti ecosystem, is a wonderland for photographers. Its open grasslands, dotted with acacia trees, form a dramatic backdrop for one of the world’s most concentrated populations of wildlife. For Kazu and Minako, this was their first stop on their Kenyan adventure, and the wildlife spectacle here lived up to every expectation.
As they ventured out on early morning game drives, the mist was still rising off the savannah, creating an ethereal atmosphere. The Mara is famous for its “Big Five” (lions, leopards, rhinoceroses, elephants, and buffalo), but it’s the sense of raw, untamed nature that truly stands out. Every turn of the jeep offered a new scene to capture: a pride of lions lounging beneath the shade of a tree, a solitary elephant moving through the tall grass, and the occasional cheetah sprinting after a gazelle.
**Photographic Moments:**
Kazu, known for his mastery of capturing light, was particularly drawn to the Mara’s sunrises and sunsets. The golden light filtering through the grasslands provided the perfect setting for dramatic, wide-angle shots of the landscape. One of the standout moments was capturing the silhouette of a lone giraffe against the orange-pink hues of dawn.
Minako, on the other hand, has a penchant for wildlife portraiture, and she found herself especially captivated by the personalities of the Mara’s animal residents. One particularly striking shot was of a young lion cub, eyes wide with curiosity, as it peeked through the tall grass. The playful, yet powerful, energy of the cubs contrasted beautifully with the older, more regal lions in the same pride.
They were also fortunate enough to witness the famed Great Migration, a truly mesmerizing spectacle. Watching over a million wildebeest and zebras thunder across the plains, with crocodiles waiting in the Mara River, was a moment neither would soon forget.
**Photographer’s Tip:**
“Always be prepared for the unexpected,” Kazu advises. “Wildlife photography is about patience and anticipation. While a lion or a cheetah is fascinating, sometimes it’s the unexpected moments that create the most magic. A bird in flight, a fleeting glance from a zebra—those are the moments you’ll treasure.”

Naivasha National Park – Serenity Amidst the Wild**
After their adrenaline-packed days in the Masai Mara, Kazu and Minako made their way to Naivasha National Park, a serene and beautiful landscape characterized by its expansive lakes and varied wildlife. Located at the base of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Naivasha is home to a remarkable diversity of birdlife, as well as herds of giraffes, zebras, and hippos.
Unlike the open plains of the Mara, Naivasha offers a different kind of beauty—one that is quieter, more reflective. The sound of water lapping at the shore, the call of the African fish eagle, and the rustling of trees in the breeze set the tone for their time here. Early morning boat rides on Lake Naivasha provided Minako with ample opportunities to capture the incredible water birds that frequent the lake. The lake is home to hundreds of species, from the majestic African fish eagle to the striking pink-backed pelican, offering the perfect subject for Minako’s delicate bird photography.
For Kazu, the landscape itself was the main subject. The early morning mist swirling over the lake, combined with the towering acacia trees lining the shore, made for some stunning shots. One particularly memorable scene was a lone giraffe grazing along the lake’s edge, with the soft morning light illuminating its tall neck. This tranquil image contrasted beautifully with the more intense moments from their time in the Mara.
Aside from wildlife, Naivasha’s famous Crescent Island provided another unique photographic opportunity. The island, home to both grazers and predators, offered an intimate safari experience where guests can walk among wildlife in a safe and controlled manner. Kazu and Minako were able to get some incredible close-ups of the animals without the usual confines of a jeep. For Minako, this was a rare chance to capture the interaction between the animals in their natural environment.
